KAHUKU, Hawaii (AP) -- Michelle Wie moved a step closer in her long-shot bid to become the first female player to qualify for the U.S. Open, shooting an even-par 72 on Monday to win a local qualifier.

"Awesome," she said when a USGA official told her that the results were official.

The USGA believes she is the first woman to get through local qualifying for the U.S. Open. Wie and two other players advanced to sectional play next month, with Wie saying she will play in the June 5 36-hole sectional in Canoe Brook, N.J.

Playing on her home island of Oahu, Wie was steady for most of her round on the breezy, oceanside Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort, but missed a couple of short putts. She had four birdies and four bogeys.

"It's huge," Wie said. "I'm just hoping to get through this and I'm going to practice my butt off for the summer."

Joe Phengsavath of Honolulu was second with a 1-over 73. There was a three-way playoff for the third spot.

Wie opened with a birdie, sinking a 15-foot putt, but three-putted the 543-yard third to give back a stroke. She then birdied Nos. 7, 9 and 14, but followed each of them up with a bogey.

"I felt like I played good. I made the birdies where I should have," she said. "I made a lot of stupid mistakes, though."

Last year, Wie failed to advance with a 4-over 76 in the qualifier. She finished in a three-way tie for sixth and was declared the second alternate.

Wie was one of two female players in the field Monday. Fifteen-year-old Carmen Bandea of Atlanta shot an 80.

Well the day has arrived...U.S. Open sectional qualifing.
Michelle will tee off on her first 18 holes at 8:35 am eastern time. The Golf Channel will have live updates of her scoring all day on the hour and half hour. I haven't been this excited about one day of golf since Tiger's final round at the Masters in 1997! But I must remember that her chances of qualifing are much slimmer than Tiger's chances of winning the 1997 Master were. If she doesn't make it, at least she tried.

Well Michelle shot a 68 in the first 18 holes but ended up at +1 after 36 holes so better luck next time Michelle and I am sure there will be a next time.

Many skeptics came away from this with a much higher opinion of Michelle. Frank Nobilo of The Golf Channel who has always criticized Michelle for not playing in junior tournaments where she would most likely win (Ala Tiger) (boring..........) Frank Nobilo came around and praised Michelle for her poise and great ball striking (I think we all can agree that her putting was atrocious, missing 2 putts of 18 inches and a putt of 4 ft)
Anybody who would criticize her for her 3 straight bogies on her 32nd thru 34th holes must never have watched golf or just wants to denigrate Michelle. She did great today and without any doubt will someday soon play in the U.S. open.
